You've looked beyond. You know that the college experience is more than can be expressed in a postcard. At Rutgers, we want students like you who realize that success in college depends on how much you put into it. We offer 100 majors to give you the freedom to choose your path and faculty who will partner with you to give you the opportunity to succeed - but enough about us...this is about you.
You may be wondering how Rutgers can prepare you for graduate school or your career. Or maybe you want to hear from current students to get the real scoop. Or maybe (OK, definitely...) your parents want some information to help you with your decision.
It all starts here...
- Don't be surprised if you're surprised.
Think about what kind of college you want. Snow? Sea? Mountain trails? City streets? Small? Large? Be aware that what you want may change. Talk with your parents. They'll help you decide what is best for you. Even if you don't know a lot about a college, look into it anyway - you may be surprised! - Check out college guides and websites, go on lots of college visits. Colleges will send you brochures, newsletters, emails, you name it... but you should stay in control by doing your own research and getting information you want, when you want it. Talk with current students or recent graduates who will tell it to you straight.
- Right up through senior year, your grades will count. So don't catch "senioritis"! Colleges look at your final transcript to make sure you finished strong.
- Stick to a few clubs and activities and excel in them. Rise to leadership positions in your junior and senior years. Colleges would rather see a strong academic record with one or two leadership positions in areas that truly interest you than a long list of activities and Cs and Ds on your transcript.
- Helping others matters. And not just because it looks good on a college application. Volunteering for community service or assisting family members helps make you a better and more interesting person.
- Keep track of invitations, deadlines, and carefully follow all instructions. Make sure you apply for admission, scholarships, and financial aid on time so you won't miss out on opportunities.
